Serving Guidelines
How much wine to make will depend on various factors, including the number of guests, whether it's a wine-drinking crowd, the format of the reception, the time of year, time of day, and the menu. As a general rule it is better to have a little more than not enough.
The standard 750ml wine bottle holds 25 ounces; count on five servings of wine, at five ounces each, from one bottle. For sparkling wines served in flutes, allow for four ounces per serving (plus foam), which equals six servings per bottle. Other bottle size calculations are as follows:
- 2.5 glasses per 375ml/13oz bottle
- Five glasses per 750ml/26oz bottle
- Seven glasses per 1 litre/35oz bottle
- 10.5 glasses per 1.5 litre/52oz "Magnum"
Follow these steps when estimating your needs:
- Calculate how many people will be drinking at the event.
- Multiply this number by four (to give you the maximum number of standard drinks per person you will need).
- Divide number of standard drinks by glasses per bottle (depending on bottle size to be used)
- Divide number of bottles by 28 to determine number of batches and round up
For example:
- 100 guests attending
- 100 x 4 standard drinks = 400 standard drinks
- 400 / 5 (5 glasses per 750ml bottle) = 80 bottles of wine
- 80/28 750ml bottles per batch = 2.85, or 3 batches of wine will be needed
Therefore, you could make one batch of red wine, one batch of white wine, and one batch of rosé or sparkling wine.
